The Real Scoop On The Bass Fishing Reel

No matter what you are fishing for whether it’s bass, bluegill, trout, marlin, tuna or shark, there are only three basic kinds or reels. Out of these three basic reels the one you choose to use as a bass fishing reel depends on how experienced you are and how comfortable you are using that particular reel.

The Big Three

A spincast reel is a good bass fishing reel for the beginner. It’s a closed face reel which means you can't see the line on the reel and out of the three the spincast is by far the easiest reel to use, all you have to do is push a button, cast and reel. It doesn't get any easier than that. The advantage to using a spincast reel as a bass fishing reel is that it’s practically tangle free but if you do get a tangle you won't know it until it’s too late.

The second kind of real that make a good bass fishing reel is the spinning reel. This type of reel is probably the most popular among your everyday angler. Still very easy to use but there is a little more to know about this type of reel. In order to cast you must pull back what is known as the bail, then hold the line with your finger, cast and release the line at the right time.

The advantage to using this type of reel is that the spools can be changed if necessary to a heavier or lighter line. This real takes a little bit of practice but once mastered it makes an excellent bass fishing reel.

The third kind of bass fishing reel is the baitcast reel. The biggest difference between this and the spinning reel is the way the line is released off the spool. With a baitcast reel you must also release a bail but when you cast, the line spins off the spool like a spool of thread.

The most difficult thing about this reel is you have to control how fast the line comes off the reel. If it comes off too fast you are going to have back lash and that leads to a horrific tangle, this tangle is known in the angler world as a birds nest and the only way to get rid this birds nest is to cut it out, count your losses and move on. The baitcast reel is the most popular bass fishing reel among the pro angler. However this type of reel takes a lot of practice to master and I do not recommend using this type of reel if you are a beginner.
