Facts About Striped Bass Fishing

A very popular species for bass fishing is the striped bass. This type of fish is second in popularity after the largemouth bass. This fish is found all over the world and maybe this is one of the major factors of why it is so popular with fishermen.

Location of Stripped Bass

The best striped bass fishing places are in the Kerr Reservoir and the Santee Cooper Reservoir in Virginia and Carolina respectively. These are also famous because they are the only places where stripped fish are self-sustaining. The natural habitat of this fish is on the East Coast line of USA, south Florida, the Gulf Coast and the Gulf of St Lawrence.

The life circle of the stripped bass

In order to have a good striped bass fishing you should know the habits and the way of life of the fish you are pursuing. The striped bass spawns between mid February and mid late July when they start migrating towards the oceans. The temperature of the water for spawning should be between 61 and 69 degrees, otherwise they will not spawn. The spawning is usually done in fresh waters even when the current is swift and strong. There are a great number of fish depending upon their location who do not migrate at all. For example, the striped bass in the Ace Basin (South Carolina) never enter the ocean. There are strong beliefs, though not totally proved that they never leave the native river.

The striped bass is a very little known fish

The striped bass fishing is a bit more localized than you would like to believe. This is because each has almost its own species of stripped bass. The difference among the species which live in different locations is so high, that there is not a list of common behavior for the striped to follow during striped bass fishing.

The favored spots

You will find stripped fish all over the place, after mid July. Their favorite places being around vegetation or structures. Where none are available they hide in muddy waters. Bass has a very keen sense of smell and vision and can see even in the murkiest of waters. Some striped bass species migrate during the summer only to return early in January-February for spawning. The migration route has been identified to be along the Mexican coast to British Columbia and back.
